Tiny T-Birds is a high school laboratory child care center serving the needs of infants through children five years of age, as well as MHS students enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program. The MHS Family & Consumer Sciences Department offers this program as part of Arizona Career and Technical Education. As a component of the program, high school students observe, plan, and work with young children under the direct supervision of professional staff. These students also participate in the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) student organization.
Our vision is to provide high quality early care and education that supports and nurtures all children as thinkers, researchers, and problem solvers during their journey of learning.
Our mission is to provide infants through children five years of age with a safe, nurturing, caring, and positive environment that encourages active learning. Our knowledgeable and well-trained staff is committed to facilitating child-centered and developmentally appropriate curriculum to promote the social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and creative growth of all children.
The early years are a critical time of growth and development. We believe young children learn best through play, exploration, and discovery. Through play-based curriculum, children learn to express themselves, think critically, solve problems creatively, and interact positively with others. Our program offers a balance of teacher-structured and child-initiated activities, as well as, frequent hands-on activities that focus on the process of learning which helps children develop a greater love for learning.
Respecting the complexity of Early Childhood, we maintain goals for young children that are developmentally appropriate by providing them with key learning experiences. It is the goal of our program to help children develop the following:
The center is open year round from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Doors will open at 6:55 a.m. to allow parents adequate time to put their child’s belongings in the designated areas and to bring their child to their respective classroom. The center will be closed on the following days:
Program enrollment is open to the community, however, priority is given to our teen parents and district employees. If space is not available, parents will have the option of placing their child’s name on the waiting list. We do not require a registration fee at this time. We will grant admission on the basis of availability, and we will notify parents by phone when space becomes available. Enrollment must begin within one week of being contacted, or the space will be forfeited, and the child’s name will be removed from the waiting list.
Each child must have a completed enrollment packet on file which includes, but is not limited to an emergency card, a photo authorization, a payment agreement form, and a current copy of the child’s immunization record. The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) requires that we maintain accurate, up-to-date immunization records. Immunization records are required prior to your child’s first day of enrollment and need to be updated whenever your child receives a new immunization. The ADHS also requires that we provide families with a notice of inadequate immunizations when children are due for immunizations. Furthermore if we do not receive documentation of required immunizations within the mandatory 15 day grace period, the child may not attend the center.
Children will be assigned to an age group/classroom based on their age and development level at the start of the school year. As your child ages up and openings become available, we will discuss transitioning your child to the next age group/classroom. Please keep in mind, children do not automatically advance to the next progressive age group on their birthday.
The center offers child care services for infants to children three years of age, preschool education for children ages three (must be independently toilet trained) to five, and afterschool care for kindergartners. Weekly full-day (more than six hours) or part-day (less than six hours) care is available year round. Daily care is only available during school breaks and summer vacation.
Our maximum licensed capacity is 59 children designated as follows:
Infant Program: 6 weeks to 12- 15 months
Our infant program ensures that babies receive the personal one-on-one attention that they need to develop trust for the world around them. We hold, cuddle, talk to, and sing to infants throughout the day. We work closely with parents to develop each infant’s daily schedule. Flexibility with infants is key, and our staff understands and appreciates this fact. We keep parents informed of their child’s activities through a daily log that shows meal times, nap times, and activities. The infant schedule is based on individual needs and development with an emphasis on language stimulation, motor skills, and social interactions.
Younger Toddlers Program: 12 - 15 months (solid walking) to 2 years - 2½ years
When infants are between 12 - 15 months of age and solid walkers, they graduate to our Younger Toddlers program. At this age, children develop a greater independence, but still have a strong need for one-on-one affection and attention. We encourage young toddlers to explore and discover new things with guidance and encouragement from teachers. At this age, we also introduce a more structured schedule. This helps toddlers feel more secure by providing them with a sense of time and expectation of things to come. The classroom is equipped with the latest in age appropriate toys and activity centers to ensure each child is fully engaged and enjoying each day.
Older Toddlers Program: 2 years (toilet training has been introduced) to 3 - 3½ years
Our older toddlers classroom allows children more opportunity for growth and development through the use of activity centers and structured playtime. Circle time and teacher led activities also become a larger part of the daily schedule. Greater independence emerges at this stage, and we give children opportunities to explore and learn with little interference. Another big milestone of this year is toilet learning. Our staff is well trained in this area and will work closely with parents to help their child master this important skill.
Preschool Program – 3 ½ years (independently toilet trained) – 5 years
Our Preschool program is exceptional. We use creative curriculum to guide instruction. Creative curriculum is the country’s leading scientifically based, comprehensive curriculum for preschool programs. We present language arts, math, music, and science concepts through play-based learning centers to encourage self-discovery and confidence. The use of songs, games, and art projects ensure that children are learning in a fun and enriching environment.
We believe in the value of both structured and non-structured activities. We post a daily schedule of activities and weekly lesson plans in each classroom. Should you have any questions, please feel free to speak with your child’s teacher.
The school district supports our Early Childhood Program by providing and maintaining our child care facility and utilities. However, tuition is the primary funding source for staff salaries and the purchase of equipment and supplies. We require a non-refundable registration fee of $25.00 with your enrollment packet.
Tuition is based on your child’s enrollment status, as teachers are scheduled based on class attendance. With that being said, parents are charged for any absences (sick days or vacation days) with the exception of holidays, center closings, and scheduled weekly vacation time.
The tuition for early care and education services are as follows:
* 10% tuition discount for siblings (two or more chilren) and CRUHSD #2 full time staff.
